Charles Charlesworth first saw the light of day on March 14, 1829. No one in his home
town of Straffordshire, England, had any reason to doubt that he would be anything
but a happy and healthy child. And indeed, the boy's first years were
blissfully ordinary. At the age of four, however, little Charles sprouted whiskers and reached sexual maturity. Aging rapidly over the next three years, Charles developed conspicuous veins and tendons, white hair, shriveled skin, and the gait and posture of a man ten times his age. One day in his seventh year, Charles fainted and did not revive. The remarkable child had expired of natural causes, the coroner ruled-- merely old age. |
